Sustaining Environment

Humans have to protect environment to lead a healthy life as Humans and environment are interdependent. Currently, pollution and environmental decay is the biggest problem faced by all nations in the world.

The Theme of Sustaining Environment is imparted through the Samskaram of Reverence for Rivers Symbolised by Ganga Vandanam and Mother-Earth by Bhoomi Vandanam. The Ganga [flowing water] and the Bhoomi [earth] Symbolise the five fundamental elements of nature [panchabhootas- namely [Akash, Vayu, Agni, Jal and Bhoomi] which constitute the environment

1. Bhoomi Vandanam

Mata Bhumih Putroham Prithivyah, (Earth is my mother, I am her son) – (Atharva Veda 12-1-12)

While the mainstream Western philosophy of Nature sees Nature as mere “resources” for human consumption. While the Shanatan Dharma seers advocate for caring for nature and reciprocal attitude, they see nature-human relation as motherchild relation to nurture each other. As the Earth is construed as mother caring for Her off- springs, the Nature is regarded as intrinsically or inherently valuable, draws respect as well. The concept of Bhoomimata revered in the Vedas, particularly in Bhoomisukta, is unique. She is adorned with mountains, hills, plains, heights, slopes, forests, plants, herbs, and treasures, takes care of every creature that breathes with things that are strength-giving and nourishing. She gives shelter to all the seekers of truth, who are tolerant and have understanding. Reverence to Bhoomimata gives us an opportunity to convey our gratitude to God, who created this universe

2. Ganga Vandanam

Several thousands of years ago during the Vedic times the very rhythm of life was dictated by flowing water. Since then the Hindus have held rivers in great reverence. This reverence was by no means born of a superstitious belief. If the ancient Hindus worshipped their rivers it was also on account of the “all-round prosperity they bring in their wake”. As these mighty rivers “have perennially been a source of livelihood to millions of people living in areas lying along their courses, no wonder people see in them a manifestation of divine female power (shakti)”. The Ganga is as alive as it ever was with the hopes and dreams of an entire culture and it represents all rivers that flow through Bharat”
